ITC to probe Nintendo Wii patent infringement
by Radka Konkolova
Everybody nowadays uses remote controls for various actions, because it is possible to control almost everything from some direction. It is very practical and comfortable, but sometimes it is really hard to persuade your remote control to do what it should do. I mean that sometimes it is really difficult to change TV channels by remote control because it doesn’t respond very well to your request.
But one company has come with brilliant idea of such controls. It is really something cataclysmal and has already achieved huge success among the consumers. The place where the newest piece of remotes was invented and constructed is Hillcrest Laboratories. It is truly something special, what is able to respond to the gentlest move of user’s hand and fingers. Also control of this device is very easy, simple and comfortable because it has got only two buttons and scrolling button like the computer mouse does. Usage is also very simple and it works on the principle of the intuitive control from user’s side what is very useful and funny.
But not only Hillcrest Laboratories consider this remote control to be very practical and entertaining mainly for gaming video games. Also Japanese producer of video games and consoles for them, Nintendo, Inc. considers so. Their newest console named Wii includes the same remote control. It is because Nintendo wanted to introduce and launch something new, what would be very attractive for stable or potential customers and make their gaming more entertaining and more interactive. This handheld control is very useful for the console and interesting too because you can imagine you hold the real bat, tennis racket or even a sword, so you have to move when gaming.
And this has caused a problem because Hillcrest Labs has accused Nintendo of infringing four patents to make the top selling Wii game console. But this is very unpleasant situation for both sides, especially for Hillcrest Laboratories which decided to file a complaint to the US International Trade Commission against Nintendo. ITC received this message and agreed to look into this problem. I am really curious about the solution…
